Summer Flowers

Saturday, November 29th, 2014

It’s that time of year when it is hard to find a good weather window to go out and shoot and the over 5000 images I have in my files from this year are nagging at me.  So, this week I started the process of sifting through and deleting those with no redeeming value and processing those with potential. This shot from North Mountain Park back in August benefited from a little cropping and an impressionist filter from Topaz Impression.

Autumn Leaves

Saturday, November 15th, 2014

I had to take another trip to Lithia Park this week and it was still stunning though perhaps past peak. I wanted to share a macro image in contrast to last week’s landscape though I again had many beautiful images of both genres to choose from. Beautiful as these leaves were they were a little dirty and scuffed around the edges so it seemed appropriate to give them an impressionistic treatment. This served to soften many of the flaws. Before Topaz Impression I also put it into Nik Color Efex pro for detail and a center light.  I also did some work with the spot healing brush and content aware fill to eliminate some distractions.

Van Gough meets Lithia Park

Saturday, November 8th, 2014

I thought that being in the throes of moving I had completely missed fall color this year but a post from a fellow photographer alerted me to the fact that Lithia Park in Ashland was still putting on a pretty good show. It was hard to pick an image of the week there was so much color and inspiration just in the Japanese Garden.  But I liked this impressionistic treatment from Topaz Impression using a Van Gough look. My self criticism here is that I probably should have had the bench further to the left so it is not looking out of the image.  On the other had that may just give it a different dynamic.

Poppy Impression

Saturday, October 18th, 2014

Well, photography has been about the furthest thing from my mind this week as I have been busy closing on my new house and working out all the last minute bugs.  So, I had to pull something out of the archives to process at the last minute. This poppy was shot in April at the Albuquerque Botanical Gardens. It was a little too scruffy around the edges to work as a straight photograph but with the Cezanne II treatment in Topaz Impression it looks pretty good.

It wasn’t a big week for photography between resting on my laurels after completing the 100 days project and last minute issues with the completion of my new home. I did spot these natty awnings in downtown Medford where I was meeting a friend for dinner and the evening light couldn’t have been more perfect.  I’m seeing a lot of potential for architectural detail photos in old downtown Medford. In post I just added some detail in CEP and a mild painterly treatment in Topaz Impression.

Day 99 – Provolt Store

Sunday, October 5th, 2014

Here’s another one from the Applegate Valley.  I admit I hoped at the time that trip would give me enough images to finish out the project.  The processing challenge on this one was that I wanted to give it a painterly look but I still wanted to be able to read the 7up sign. After narrowing down the options and doing a little tweaking I am pretty happy with the result I got from Topaz Impression.

Day 98 – Vitus Vinifera

Saturday, October 4th, 2014

I took a little drive through the Applegate wine country this week hoping to get a chance to photograph some grapes.  This image or something similar has been in my mind every since I was in Italy and too sick to get off the bus when we stopped at a vinyard.  I’m hoping there will be many more like it in the next few years. In post processing I did the usual routine in CEP then took it into Topaz Impression for a light painterly treatment.

Day 97 – Barber Pole

Friday, October 3rd, 2014

I haven’t added anything to the Nostalgia collection in awhile so I was excited to come across this barber pole in Jacksonville, Oregon yesterday.  I had to photoshop out some other signs and crop to make it a more generic barber shop.  Then I processed it in CEP and finally took it into Topaz Impression for a Cezanne look.  It was kind of green so I added a warming filter in Photoshop. I’m liking the result. I’m wondering though how it would look in black and white with just the stripes in color?

Day 94 – Morning Glory

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

I took a stroll in the park yesterday and found some amazingly beautiful Morning Glories.  Still fascinated with Topaz Impression.  This one got the Cezanne treatment

Day 93 – Lock

I’m still having fun processing earlier images in Topaz Impression. this is a lock on the side of a barn door out in the orchard country.
