To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun, That age is best which is the first, Then be not coy, but use your time, -Robert Herrick (1591-1674)

Well my good intentions of photographing every day this week have been preempted by the need to help my Mom get ready for Christmas and a rather nasty turn in the weather. We’ll see how tomorrow goes but for today you get another one from the rose garden. When I looked at this picture the first line of this poem just popped into my head so I thought, well, why not. We might say the same of autumn. It is going, going…and soon will be gone.

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today Tomorrow will be dying.
Old Time is still a-flying;

And this same flower that smiles today

Tomorrow will be dying.

The higher he’s a-getting,

The sooner will his race be run,

And nearer he’s to setting.

When youth and blood are warmer;

But being spent, the worse, and worst

Times still succeed the former.

And while ye may, go marry;

For having lost but once your prime,

You may forever tarry.
