While Highway 99 remains closed from Valley View Road north of Ashland to South Stage Road in south Medford, it is possible to get to Talent on country roads taking off from South Stage Road. The boundary for the level three evacuation zone at the north end of Talent is Talent Avenue. So, I was able to drive my car to park on Talent Avenue without violating any rules. I then walked the two blocks to my house needing to cross only about 5 feet of burned grass. A police car was leaving my neighborhood as I was crossing Highway 99 but he seemed to have bigger worries than a fat old woman wandering around in the restricted zone.

The houses along my street are built so that the garages are in the back, accessed by an alleyway which has a fence on the other side. My neighbor two doors down had created a small rock garden along the fence behind her house which included two tall ceramic cats. I found only one cat standing and you can see the burned boards from the fence and the melted flowerpot. Her little rabbits a fewrabbits feet away were guarding a living plant with the fence intact behind them. That is how close the fire came to my house. There were large black ashes in my backyard and a dead bird on my patio table. Otherwise, the house seemed in good shape and the only smoke I smelled was near an open window.

My nephew, who is fleet manager for the city of Ashland, talked to some firemen and they thought that our neighborhood survived because we have newer roofs up to fire code and hardi-plank siding so it was hard for embers to take hold. I also heard from another neighbor that a firefighter who lives behind our alley gave our neighborhood a little extra love. Then again, maybe miracles do happen.

The good news for Talent is that much of our downtown area remains intact. We have a Post Office, a grocery store, a city hall, a community center, and a library all standing tall. Our beloved Camelot theater was saved and most of the businesses along Hwy 99 between Valley View and Colver Rd. on the west side appear in good shape. Not so much on the east side but more on that tomorrow.

New Project 100 days of Recovery…maybe more

BES

I’ve decided it’s time to start a new project. On Tuesday, September 8, 2020 my little town of Talent, Oregon and the neighboring town of Phoenix were devastated by wildfire. By some miracle my neighborhood and home came through without a scratch. It is going to be a long time, though before life returns to normal as most of the neighborhoods near me were at least partially destroyed as were many other neighborhoods, and businesses in the community.

I’m starting this out as a 100 days project because I want to give myself an out but I hope I have the stamina to turn it into a 365 days project  to document the stories of hope and positive rebuilding. I can’t promise all the pictures will be beautiful as I also want to show what it is we are recovering from.

This first image was taken on September 6 and was still on my camera when I downloaded some flower pictures I took around my Mom’s house where I am currently sheltering during evacuation. Consider it the before picture. I hope my flowers will still be there when I get home but they aren’t getting any water so that may be too much to hope for. Still it is a small loss compared to what others are suffering right now

I’ve been neglecting the Image of the Week lately mainly because I haven’t been doing much photography. What I have been doing is creating a series of digital art pieces from my trip to France last year. So, even if it is not a photograph it is still an image. If you have been following me for awhile you may remember seeing the original of this one about a year ago.

Cody plays rope

What can I say. This guy has completely taken over my life. I knew raising a puppy would take some effort but I didn’t know it was going to be a full time job. I think next week we will practice Mom leaving home for a few hours and riding in the car. I have to give him credit though. He is a really good little fetcher.

Sunflower

Sunflower

It’s not really summer until the sunflowers come out to play. I had a friend in San Francisco who always used to tell me “If there’s one thing the world doesn’t need, it’s another picture of the Golden Gate Bridge.” I suppose he would say the same thing about sunflowers. But part of the challenge is coming up with a new way to look at these same old things. This one was captured with the Lensbaby Sweet 50 and had texture or two added in post processing.

Day 100 – Mother and Child

Mother-and-Child

And that my friends is, as they say, a wrap. I hate to quit when it seems the world needs these moments of beauty more than ever. But, in truth, I need a break and my new puppy is demanding my full attention. I will be back to the weekly format next weekend. Until then, may you walk in beauty.

I was excited to see that a photographer I follow was quoting John O’Donohue in his weekly blog this week. So, I thought I would end with the very apt passage that he shared:

The beauty of the earth is a constant play of light and dark, visible and invisible. We perceive and participate in that beauty through the interplay of senses and spirit. Our senses are lanterns that illuminate the world. Beauty is never simply in the mind alone. Beauty awakens for us through what we hear, touch, taste, scent and see. The great traditions have always recognized that beauty is a mysterious presence. Beauty envelops the heart and mind. In beauty’s presence there is no longer any separation between thought and senses, between heart and soul. Indeed the experience of beauty confirms the intricate harmony and creative tension of senses and thought. Without the senses we could never know beauty. Without thought, beauty would seem transient and illusory.

Day 99 – Chive with Bee

Chive

I was working on photographing this chive with it’s fellows out of focus in the background when the bee just happened along.

From John O’Donohue:

Beauty awakens the soul, yet it is never simply ethereal. Beauty offers a profound psychological and indeed mystical invitation. The dream of beauty is the self drawn forth to its furthest awakening, where the senses and the soul are utterly alive and yet in a harmony, brimming with presence.
