Day 10 – Wild Pansy

Pansy

Two or three years ago I had a color bowl of large and small pansies sitting on my front porch. Every since these little guys, only about and inch and a half in diameter, have been jumping up in my lawn in the spring. This one looks like it might have been nipped by the frost we had the other night but I still think its pretty.

From Frederick Turner:

A beautiful thing, though simple in its immediate presence, always gives us a sense of depth below depth, almost an innocent wild vertigo as one falls through its levels.

Pink Flower with Raindrops

PinkFlower

I don’t even know what kind of flower this is but I found it blooming in one of my neighbors beds next to the street. The raindrops just added a little extra something.

Today’s quote is from Blaise Pascal:

In difficult times you should always carry something beautiful in your mind.

In case you wondered most of the quotes I’m posting come from a book by John O’Donohue simply titled Beauty. It has been languishing on my to read shelf for some time and I thought this would be as good a time as any to get ‘er done.

Daffodil

Daffodil

I’m sorry, I have been neglecting my image of the week as well as my own need for creativity. In this time of isolation and darkness I decided we all need a little more beauty in our lives. So, though it has been only a little over six months since my last 100 days project ended, I feel called to start a new one. This one will be called 100 days of beauty. Thought I would start on my street on work my way out. One of my neighbors has some gorgeous daffodils. I expect I will be visiting them again soon.

After keeping and eagle eye on the weather for a month I finally got a break on the same day I didn’t have to be anywhere so that I could escape to Jedediah Smith State Park to kick off the Redwoods National and State Parks project. It was a good start but I wish I had been able to stay a little longer. Maybe next time.  I did get a few ideas on how to approach the project and look forward to the months ahead and many trips to the redwoods. And here is the art piece I made to highlight some of my favorite things from my hikes that day.

Catkins

Catkins

Well, this past week was not very conducive to nature photography, unless you like snow, which I don’t. So, I had to reach back to a walk in Lithia Park the week before when I captured this nice image of some catkins hanging over the creek. I’m hoping to get out and find some more birds tomorrow so wish me luck.

And here is the art piece that goes with this one. In all honesty I’m not sure this was such a good idea but maybe if I get some images to work with a little earlier in the week I won’t feel so pressured to get an art piece done AND post the image of the week.

Day 100 – Old Rose

Rose

For my last hurrah I took the Velvet 56 and the EOS R to the Harry and David Rose Garden. There is such a poignant beauty to faded roses and some of them look like they had been freeze dried with the colors still warm and vibrant. I added a high pass filter to bring out the details and gave it a little pop of vibrance and saturation. Then I added a texture that seemed to compliment the texture of the rose.  And that, my friends, is a wrap. It’s been fun playing with my lensbaby lenses and getting to know them a little better. As always some of the images were better than others but I learned a lot and while I’m glad it’s over, I’m not sorry I started. I’ll be reverting to image of the week again now that the 100 days project is done.

Day 98 – Hydrangea

3_Hydrangea

I noticed my tiny Japanese Maple was putting on quite a show of color so I grabbed the closest camera to hand which turned out to be the M3 with the Burnside mounted on it. But when I got up close the leaves were pretty far gone and not nearly as pretty as I thought. So, I turned to my Hydrangea which just never stops giving interesting and colorful compositions. I love the mix of purple and green in the background. I though about adding a texture but decided that would just be gilding the lily. As I approach the end of the project I’m torn between “Thank God it’s almost over” and “I don’t want to stop.”  But trust me I will, I have plenty of other projects to work on.
